Malaysia Names New Mediator for Southern Thailand Peace Talks

Malaysia has named retired Lt Gen Dato' Ahmad Norihan bin Jalal as its new facilitator for the peace dialogue in Thailand's southern border provinces.

Ahmad Norihan previously served as Malaysia's 17th director general of defence intelligence, from August 2020 to November 2023. He brings more than 33 years of military service, including senior roles in security analysis, strategic intelligence and the management of international operations. Officials hope his experience will give the talks fresh momentum.

He will act as mediator between the Thai government and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), the main separatist group in the region. Observers see the appointment as a significant step, partly because of his military background.

Malaysia's National Security Council, which sits under the Prime Minister's Department, announced the appointment on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The statement said Ahmad Norihan's expertise, leadership and credibility would help strengthen Malaysia's standing as a mediator that all sides trust, and would help move the process forward in a constructive and lasting way. He replaces Datuk Haji Mohd Rabin bin Basir, whose assignment has now ended.

Anchana Heemmina, president of the Duayjai Association, a civil society group working in the southern border provinces, said the change deserves close attention, especially for what it signals about the direction of talks between Bangkok and the BRN. She pointed to several shifts happening at once: a new military leader in Thailand, a Malaysian facilitator with a military background, and civilian heads leading both the Thai and BRN negotiating teams.
